According to Ayuba Yalaks, National Project Coordinator for the Nigeria Climate Adaptation – Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP-EIB), the Ogun State government has paid a N500 million counterparty fund contribution and is prepared to address gully erosion.
According to Yalaks, the fund is one of the primary factors used to evaluate the European Investment Bank’s support fund for NEWMAP-EIB approved intervention sites. Speaking in Abeokuta on Wednesday, he evaluated the state’s readiness and readiness.
Yalaks told reporters shortly after the inspection exercise that the state is ready to begin operations and promised that financial and technical support would be provided by the federal government and development partners.
Mr. Dapo Okubadejo, the governor’s chief economic adviser and commissioner for finance, welcomed the team on behalf of the state governor. He and his colleagues from the ministries of budget and planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, and environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, expressed gratitude for the visit and said that the payment of the counterpart funds showed the state’s commitment to helping protect its citizens from the devastating effects of flooding and erosion.
Ismail Adenuga, the State Project Coordinator for NEWMAP-EIB, clarified that the primary objective of the inspection tour and visit was to assess the degree of erosion damage and its impacts on communities and the environment while offering
long-term fix for the locations that were found.
In the meantime, some locals from the impacted areas—Messrs. Olubajo, Banuso Oyeyinka, Kayode Bello, and Funmilayo Egbeleye—pleaded with the government to find a long-term solution by appropriately releasing the floodwaters into the right streams in order to stop property damage and fatalities.
