The US House of Representatives is considering a resolution, introduced by Representative Riley M. Moore, condemning the persecution and killing of Christians in Nigeria and supporting President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for religious freedom violations. The six-page document cites data describing the situation as one of the world’s worst since 2009. The resolution claims that 50,000 to 100,000 Christians have been martyred since 2009, with over 7,000 killed in 2025 alone (an average of 35 daily), and over 19,000 churches attacked. It specifically mentions that more than 9,500 people, mostly Christians, were killed in Benue and Plateau States between May 2023 and May 2025 by Fulani militants, asserting Christians are being killed at a rate five times higher than Muslims. The resolution alleges the attacks by groups like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Fulani militants are deliberate campaigns of religious cleansing, not random violence. It accuses President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of denying religious persecution despite extensive reports. The resolution urges the US government to use diplomatic, economic, and security pressure on Nigeria to end impunity, protect Christian communities, repeal blasphemy laws, and release faith-based prisoners, affirming US solidarity with persecuted Christians.
