Arsenal’s denial of a late penalty in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid has been justified by UEFA.
In the 78th minute, Eberechi Eze, who had entered the game as a replacement in the second half, collapsed inside the box.
Atletico defender David Hancko was first given a penalty by referee Danny Makkelie.
However, the VAR stepped in and instructed Makkelie to examine the situation at the on-pitch monitor even though Hancko had touched Eze’s foot.
Makkelie made the decision to disregard the penalty kick after seeing several replays.
Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, was furious over the decision and described it as “completely unacceptable.”
UEFA, however, made the following succinct statement: “Atleti player, No 17, did not commit a foul on the opponent.”
