Victor Ezeji, a former Super Eagles forward, has been arrested by Rivers State police on suspicion of fraud involving voided checks totaling around N40 million.
Following weeks of observation, Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department detectives picked up Ezeji on Monday, according to The Guardian.
It is believed that in July, the 44-year-old and his spouse, Celestina, bought 60,000 liters of diesel from Dagogo Emmanuel, a merchant. They purportedly sent out N39.8 million checks, however they later bounced.
According to reports, the pair fled before Ezeji was found this week.
The former Enyimba striker acknowledged signing the checks, but he insisted his wife handled the transaction and denied any direct involvement.
Celestina is still at large.
Ezeji played with the Sharks, Dolphins, Sunshine Stars, Heartland, and Enyimba throughout his nearly two-decade career, winning the CAF Champions League twice.
