Nigeria’s Super Falcons began their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign strongly, securing a convincing 3-0 victory against Tunisia in their first group match.
The momentum came to a halt following an unimpressive 1-0 victory against Botswana and a scoreless draw with Algeria in the last group match. In the quarter-finals, however, Justin Madugu’s team unexpectedly erupted with a merciless 5–0 annihilation of Zambia. The Falcons can take flight past the Banyana Banyana in Tuesday’s semifinal against South Africa, and here’s why.
Nigeria’s major assets have included consistency in all zones of the field. With Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo at the forefront, Osinachi Ohale bringing experience, and Oluwatosin Demehin providing youthful energy in defence, the Falcons have discovered their rhythm. With Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal and Ashleigh Plumptre and Michelle Alozie offering support from the wings, Nigeria has appeared both formidable and dangerous, remaining unbeaten.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade has also been orchestrating the actions of a light midfield. Her incisive passing and accurate perception have facilitated the transition from defence to attack, connecting the midfield with Ihezuo and Okoronkwo, who have contributed a combined total of seven goals and assists.
