When visiting the West Bank, Israeli military open fire on diplomats.

Foreign diplomats were visiting the occupied West Bank on Wednesday when Israeli forces fired warning shots, the military said, expressing regret for the incident after the Palestinian Authority claimed that Israelis had shot at the delegation “deliberately.”

The delegation and accompanying journalists were seen fleeing for cover as gunfire could be heard in AFP footage taken at the scene of the incident in Jenin, a city in the West Bank that is frequently the target of Israeli military raids.

No casualties were recorded in the event, which attracted immediate condemnation from Spain and Italy.

The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned “the heinous crime committed by the Israeli occupation forces, which deliberately targeted by live fire an accredited diplomatic delegation to the State of Palestine during a field visit”.

“The delegation strayed from the authorized route and entered an area where they were not authorized to be,” the Israeli military stated in a statement.

It stated that it “regrets the inconvenience caused” and that “soldiers operating in the area fired warning shots to distance them away.”

Shots echoed from the vicinity of the Jenin refugee camp, according to an AFP journalist.

Shots rang out as two individuals in Israeli army uniforms pointed firearms at a crowd of protesters from behind metal gates in a video made public by the Palestinian Foreign Ministry.

Although the journalist in Jenin said the video seems to show the camp’s eastern entrance, AFP was unable to confirm it right away.

The Israeli military, which in January launched a major operation in the Jenin area to stamp out militant groups, has recently installed metal gates as seen in the video at the entrances to the camp.

A European diplomat present during the visit told AFP he heard “repeated shots” coming from inside Jenin refugee camp.

“We were doing a visit with the governor of Jenin to the border of the camp to see the destruction”, the diplomat said.

“It was the last part of the visit, and suddenly we heard shots coming from the camp. It was not like once or twice. It was like repeated shots. So at that moment, we just all started running back to the cars”, the diplomat added.

Ahmad al-Deek, political advisor for the Palestinian foreign ministry, told AFP he was leading the delegation.

“We denounce this rash action by the Israeli army, particularly at a moment when it provided the diplomatic delegation with a glimpse of the life of the Palestinian people,” he declared.

The Jenin refugee camp has been overrun by troops and emptied of its residents since Israel began its extensive military campaign in the northern West Bank.

About 16,000 people had been displaced in Jenin by March 31, according to UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
