As the globe gets ready for globe Blood Donor Day in 2026, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, Director-General of the National Blood Service Agency, has urged more voluntary blood donations.
Yuguda declared that the World Health Organization has chosen the phrase “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood.” “Save Lives” for the worldwide campaign this year.
The head of the NBSA praised the season and asked Nigerians to support initiatives to increase voluntary blood donation across the country in a statement to partners and stakeholders on Tuesday.
He claims that the initiative aims to bolster international efforts to guarantee a sufficient, safe, and sustainable blood supply through frequent voluntary donations.
The campaign aims to raise awareness of the life-saving benefits of blood and plasma donation while promoting steady growth in regular, voluntary, and unpaid blood donation globally, according to Yuguda.
He continued by saying that the program would honor blood donors’ contributions and further the humanity, solidarity, and compassion that underpin blood donation.
“The campaign is designed to highlight the invaluable contributions of blood donors and promote the enduring values of solidarity, compassion and humanity that underpin blood donation,” he stated
Yuguda also urged governments, development partners, and other interested parties to boost funding for national blood programs.In order to attain universal access to safe blood transfusion services, it will motivate governments, development partners, and pertinent stakeholders to bolster and invest in national blood programs,” he stated.
The head of the NBSA revealed that the 2026 campaign would heavily emphasize community integration and grassroots engagement, with lobbying efforts going beyond healthcare facilities into communities all throughout the nation.
In order to strengthen the culture of community ownership of blood services and domesticate the message of voluntary blood donation at the grassroots level, traditional institutions, community leaders, youth groups, faith-based organizations, and local stakeholders will be actively involved, he said.
He clarified that the community-based strategy aims to dispel myths, increase public awareness of blood donation, and create long-lasting donor pools that can provide the country’s blood needs.
Yuguda continued, “The community-based approach aims to deepen public understanding of the importance of blood donation, dispel misconceptions surrounding the practice, and build sustainable donor pools capable of supporting national blood needs.”
Every year on June 14, World Blood Donor Day is commemorated to honor volunteer blood donors and promote more robust blood systems that can supply transfusions for emergencies, maternity care, surgeries, and the treatment of various illnesses. It is anticipated that the 2026 campaign will inspire governments, medical facilities, civil society organizations, and people all over the world to support blood donation as a humanitarian gesture that can save millions of lives and increase access to safe blood transfusion services.
