As preparations for the 2027 general elections progressively get underway, a faith-based organization called the Academy of Islamic Propagation, or ACADIP, has expressed worries about potential religious abuse by political actors.
Mallam Yusuf Adepoju, the group’s founder, stated the group’s stance at a Sunday gathering in Ede.
Speaking at the event, Adepoju cautioned that incorporating religious themes into political campaigns could exacerbate societal divisions and jeopardize national cohesion.
“Politicians must avoid dragging religion into their ambitions, as doing so can create unnecessary tension and weaken the bonds that hold our society together,” he stated.
Instead, Adepoju emphasized that political leaders should focus on fulfilling their pledges to the voters, characterizing these commitments as legally obligatory obligations.
“Campaign promises should not be treated lightly; they are obligations that leaders owe the people and must be fulfilled with sincerity,” he said.
He also exhorted Nigerians to support candidates who have a track record of honesty and dedication to public service in order to make educated electoral decisions.
He continued, “The electorate must look beyond sentiments and choose individuals who demonstrate honesty, accountability, and a genuine desire to serve.”
Adepoju also reiterated his dedication to fostering harmonious cohabitation, stating that he would use his recently awarded traditional title to promote harmony and Islamic principles among all populations
In a related event, Dr. Musibaudeen Idris, the chairman of the Ede Muslim Council, urged Adepoju to stick to his principles and style of leadership.
“You must continue to uphold the principles of Islam and serve as a guiding example to younger generations while encouraging harmony within the community,” Idris stated.
