Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has clarified that he does not need to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as he considers himself a member through an existing opposition coalition.
During an X Space session on Sunday night, December 28, 2025, Obi addressed recent reports suggesting he was set to officially defect to the ADC on December 31. He explained that since he has been an integral part of the coalition centered around the ADC from its inception, the idea of “joining” is redundant.
Obi also reaffirmed his respect for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, referring to him as a “respected leader” and noting that the coalition partners are unified in their goal for the 2027 elections. He dismissed rumors of internal friction regarding leadership, stating that “nobody is stepping down” for him within the ADC framework, as the focus remains on collective effort.
This clarification follows a period of significant political realignment in late 2025, during which several key opposition figures—including Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai—have coalesced around the ADC to challenge the ruling APC. Despite his deep involvement with the ADC-led coalition, Obi’s associates have previously maintained that he remains a card-carrying member of the Labour Party, suggesting his role is part of a broader “big tent” strategy.
