The Federal Government’s recent decision to temporarily prohibit the export of raw shea nuts has been hailed by the National Association of Shea Products of Nigeria (NASPAN), which sees the action as a calculated step to restore Nigeria’s position as a world leader in the shea sector.
However, the Association wants to give exporters with legitimate contract agreements 90 days to fulfill their current commitments.
Mohammed Ahmed Kontagora, the president of NASPAN, stated at a press conference in Abuja over the weekend that despite the policy’s abrupt announcement during the busiest time of the trading season, it was still a positive step that would support local processing, reduce informal trade, increase job creation, and foster rural economic growth.
