Habibu Mailemo, a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has clarified that there is no crisis within the party, stating that all focus is on getting ready for the general elections in 2027.
In an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, Mailemo disclosed this information while addressing worries about purported internal conflicts and party reorganisation.
He claims that what is taking place in the party is not a crisis but rather typical political activity leading up to the elections.
He stated, “I believe that the NDC, like any other party, is working very hard to ensure that credible candidates emerge that will lead the party into the 2027 general election.”
He clarified that disputes and conversations within political parties are common, particularly during election seasons.
And I think that, just like with any other party, you will inevitably hear problems from time to time when there is contestation. However, the party has systems in place to deal with all of these problems and proceed.
Mailemo also downplayed concerns that recent talks about party structure and authority amount to a breakdown.
He emphasised that the Kwankwasiyya Movement is still dedicated to maintaining party unity and discipline.
According to him, the movement is still researching recent statements about internal arrangements and party structure.
Nonetheless, he insisted that the Kwankwasiyya Movement is still devoted and orderly within the party framework.
One of the most organised movements is Kwankwasiyya. We will take all necessary steps to ensure the success of whatever party we are in,” Mailemo declared.
He maintained that due process was upheld nationwide in response to claims of internal strife over primaries and candidate selection.
He stated that on the 29th of last month, party primaries were held in conjunction with agreements that involved all parties involved.
For instance, on the 29th, primaries were held nationwide.Procedures were pursued to the latter, he stated.
“Prior to that, there were agreements reached by consensus where no one was left out.”
Additionally, Mailemo clarified that the party leadership has already received the names of the candidates who made it through the process in accordance with electoral regulations.
He emphasised that Kwankwasiyya members will not act outside of established procedures and will continue to adhere to party rules.
Bending the rules has always been Kwankwasiyya’s deal breaker. We follow the rules that govern the party and INEC because we are law-abiding individuals.
According to Mailemo, widespread alignment during the political process makes it challenging to distinguish Kwankwasiyya members from other party members.
Even those who had just joined the party took part in the primaries and consensus arrangements without complaining, he continued.
“There were no complaints during or after the exercise, and the process was transparent,” he stated.
He insisted that news of a crisis didn’t surface until days after the primaries were over.
The non-release of the party’s primary election results is allegedly connected to the reported crisis in the NDC’s Kano State chapter.
