Following claims that Hon. Dauda Agbu Samaila, the Executive Chairman, ordered the exhumation of Mrs. Atisaa Injuur Bem, a newly buried Benue woman, tension is rising in Tiv communities inside Wukari Local Government Area.
At the Wukari–Rafin Kada road, kilometer 15, Mrs. Atisaa, 57, was buried at her ancestral house in Tor-Iorshaer hamlet.
A lengthy period of displacement brought on by the ongoing Jukun-Tiv community issue came to an end with her burial, which was performed in accordance with Tiv customs.
However, a violent event and an alleged act of official abuse that has caused public outrage marred the funeral.
The tragedy worsened soon after the funeral as several mourners were repairing a car to return to the IDP camp, according to Mr. Peter Achibo, the leader of the Tiv IDP community in Wukari.
Three mourners were allegedly kidnapped during the attack and transported to Rafin Kada, which is close by and about five kilometers away from the scene.
According to witnesses, the kidnappers went through a military checkpoint without encountering any opposition.
Rather, soldiers apparently got in touch with Rafin Kada’s traditional king, who allegedly insisted that the kidnapped people come to his palace.
What followed has drawn widespread condemnation. Mr. Achibo alleges that Chairman Dauda Agbu Samaila imposed a ₦300,000 fine on the grieving family, ordered the arrest of some members, and shockingly, instructed that the body of Mrs. Atisaa be exhumed.
“This is a shameful abuse of power and an attack on our people, both dead and living,” Achibo said.
“These actions, if allowed to stand, will deepen divisions and set a dangerous precedent.”
The development comes just two days after a similar incident in Chiina community, where the grave of one Michael Usange was reportedly destroyed by a local militia led by one Mr. Angyu Yavini.
According to witnesses, the local government authorities have not responded to the incident or condemned it.
The Tiv community and IDP leaders have made the following demands in reaction to these incidents:
unconditional and prompt release of the family members who are being held.
complete reversal of the order for exhumation.
arrest and legal action against those in charge of the kidnapping and serious desecration.
concrete actions to help the displaced Tiv people return safely to their Wukari homes.
