Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, has urged Nigerians to demand accountability and transparency from their state governors and local government chairmen.
Ikuforiji stressed that governance shouldn’t just focus on the federal level, noting that states and local governments receive over half of Nigeria’s total revenue. He directly blamed the persistent rise in poverty on the inefficiency and mismanagement occurring at the sub-national level, where leaders fail to implement meaningful poverty-alleviation measures.
He expressed concern that many State Houses of Assembly have lost their independence, operating as mere “appendages of the executive” and failing to perform their constitutional oversight duties. He contrasted this with his own tenure, where the Lagos Assembly successfully held former governors Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola accountable.
While commending President Tinubu’s “steady and resilient” economic management and reform efforts, Ikuforiji suggested that the ADC is composed of “mere noisemakers” and insisted the All Progressives Congress (APC) remains Nigeria’s strongest political movement ahead of the 2027 elections.
