Carlos Alcaraz faced a significant scare in his first match at Wimbledon, while Aryna Sabalenka maintained her composure to advance to the second round on the tournament’s hottest opening day ever.
In a grueling battle that lasted four hours and 37 minutes on Centre Court, Alcaraz overcame the sweltering conditions to secure a 7-5, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory against the 38-year-old Fabio Fognini.
The Spaniard remarked, “I don’t understand why this is likely Fabio’s last Wimbledon; the level he has demonstrated shows he can still play for another three or four years.”
