An ex-lawmaker from Abia calls for justice in the police killing of a young person.

Chijioke Chukwu, the former Minority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, has demanded a comprehensive probe into the alleged shooting deaths of Anyim Elijah Obinna and two other members of the Ugwueke community in Bende LGA.

On April 20, 2025, Obinna, a 35-year-old young woman, was allegedly shot dead by a police officer at a hotel in the Ugwueke village while attending a friend’s birthday celebration.

In response to the event, the former Minority leader urged Abia citizens, particularly Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and representative of Bende Federal district, to step in and deliver justice for the late Obinna.

Chukwu denied that Obinna and the other two young people were the victims of a cult-related altercation, claiming that the shooting was committed by a police officer who works in Aba.

Mr. Paul Anyim, the victim’s father, also recounted the incident:

My son returned home on Saturday at around half past two o’clock after we spent the Easter holidays away from home.

“So, on Sunday, precisely fifteen minutes after six o’clock, he and his younger brother left my house after dinner to attend a friend’s birthday celebration at the Grand Star Hotel in Ugwueke.”

At 10 p.m., he claimed to have heard villagers yelling that his son, Elijah Anyim Obinna, had been shot; he went on to say that his son had been pronounced dead.

According to Mr. Anyim, on April 21, 2025, his family reported the incident to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Umuagu, Umuahia, as well as the Igbere Police Division Bende.

According to Mr. Anyim, he was summoned to return to Igbere by SCID officers, who informed him that the Igbere Police Division will bring the case file to the SCID.

He was shocked that the police had not apprehended the man who had reportedly shot his son.

At the time of this report, there has been no response to a message received on Thursday regarding the claims to DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of the Abia State Police Command.
