To demand an immediate investigation into a rumored multi-billion naira scandal by Kano State government officials, a number of civil society organizations protested in Kano State on Thursday.
Reporters were informed by Abdullahi Muhammed, coordinator of the Forum of Kano Civil Society Organizations Against Corruption, that the protest was held in order to demand an investigation into the widespread corruption that is roiling the Kano State Government.
This comes after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) revealed that Abdullahi Rogo, the Director General of Protocol in the Kano State Government, allegedly embezzled an alarming N6.5 billion that belonged to the Kano people.
The group supported the ICPC’s and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s efforts to combat state corruption.
It also called on the state House of Assembly to launch an independent investigation into the corruption claims that are roiling the state as soon as possible.
Additionally, we are pleading with the Kano State House of Assembly to conduct an impartial investigation into the issue. Additionally, we are appealing to the judiciary to guarantee fair decisions in all cases involving corruption.
Because corruption is killing Kano, we stand together. The group said, “Billions of Naira have been embezzled, public trust has been betrayed, and the people are still suffering while a select few benefit.”
“The state government has engaged in propaganda and denial, trying to discredit credible reports and downplay the scandal,” it continued, “despite the recovery of N1.2 billion by ICPC.”
