The brutal murders in the communities of Yelewata and Daudu in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State have been denounced by Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, who called the attacks “barbaric, disturbing, and completely unacceptable.”
In a statement released on Tuesday, Kalu conveyed his profound sadness over the deaths and offered his sympathies to the Benue State administration and the impacted families. He urged security forces to work together and act swiftly in order to capture and bring the perpetrators of the horrible murders to justice.
“Like the President, I urge the security authorities to take prompt, decisive action. In addition to being unsettling, the latest event in Yelewata, Benue State, is extremely discouraging.
“The barbaric killing of members of the community is utterly unacceptable. I strongly condemn this wicked act carried out by unidentified individuals,” Kalu said.
He assured that the National Assembly would continue to support efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region. According to him, legislative intervention is critical in addressing the structural gaps in Nigeria’s security framework.
As part of that commitment, Kalu disclosed that the House Committee on Constitution Review had on Monday convened a dialogue on the country’s national security architecture.
He was hopeful that the ongoing constitutional review process would strengthen border security, improve intelligence sharing, promote regional coordination, and improve inter-agency cooperation for a cohesive national response to insecurity, especially with regard to security and policing reforms.
In addition, Kalu prayed for the victims’ souls to rest in peace and exhorted everyone involved to stay dedicated to tackling the underlying causes of the violence in order to avert similar incidents in the future.
