Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State said that more than 700 persons are still unaccounted for following a recent flood that devastated the Mokwa hamlet in the Mokwa Local Government Area.
The governor revealed this on Tuesday while Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, the late Gen. Sani Abacha’s former chief security officer, and his team were in Minna, the state capital, for a condolence visit.
Yakubu Garba, his deputy, spoke on behalf of Governor Bago, who said the tragedy had taken many lives and caused suffering for several families.
“So far, 207 people have been confirmed dead and over 700 persons are still missing. We are yet to know where they are. The flooding has caused extensive damage to lives and property,” he said.
He added that more than 3,000 households were displaced by the flood, while about 400 houses were affected. Out of these, 283 homes and 50 shops were completely destroyed.
Governor Bago praised the people and organizations that donated to the victims or provided help, calling the catastrophe a national tragedy.
Additionally, he stated that the state administration was expecting the assessment reports from the professional organizations it was collaborating with to look into the source of the disaster.
The visiting delegation’s leader, Maj. Al-Mustapha, stated that they were in the state to express sympathy for the Niger State government and people, particularly those impacted in Mokwa.
