The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended several officers immediately due to their alleged unprofessional interactions with inmates at a Yobe State custodial facility.
This action was approved by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) Chairman and Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, after receiving the initial investigation results. The suspension will stay in effect until the full investigation is finished.
The Minister emphasized that the Board will not tolerate any claims of misbehavior within its agencies. The Service enforces a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of bad conduct, carelessness, violations of rights, or inappropriate ties between staff and those in custody.
The Minister warned that any officer found guilty will face disciplinary action and possible legal penalties according to existing rules.
The Controller General of the Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, promised the public that the NCoS is dedicated to professionalism, honesty, and upholding the law. He guaranteed that all correctional centers nationwide would keep operating according to established laws, moral standards, and operational guidelines.
It was widely reported that Assistant Superintendent of Correctional Services (ASC II), Sani Saleh-Bodejo, of the NCoS Yobe Command, was specifically accused of allegedly raping and getting one inmate, Blessing Sunday, pregnant. The same officer was also accused of raping another inmate named Salma.
