The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has announced that it will prosecute five herbalists arrested at shrines in Lagos and Osun states for possessing approximately $3.4 million and €280,000 in counterfeit foreign currency. The arrests followed a petition from a victim who was allegedly defrauded of 26 million Naira. According to the EFCC, the suspects—Akingbola Omotayo, Adeola Funsho Ogunrinde, Yahaya Amodu, Kubratu Babalola Olaitan, and Familola Sunday Olaitan—posed as spiritual healers capable of solving financial and personal problems through mystical means. They reportedly claimed they could manifest foreign currency that required expensive sacrifices and spiritual purification before it could be spent, allegedly using hypnosis to convince victims to fund these rituals. During the operations on December 7 and 8, 2025, investigators seized two luxury cars and mobile phones linked to the scheme. The commission stated that the suspects will be formally charged in court once the investigation is fully concluded.
