At the Apapa Port Complex, four terminal operators have received warnings from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for failing to adhere to environmental regulations.
This was revealed by Port Manager Mr. Debo Lawal in a Tuesday interview with reporters in Lagos. He said that running the port required daily attention to operational, environmental, and security issues, and that it was both rewarding and challenging.
He asserts that readiness and proactive approaches to the many problems that emerge are necessary for efficient port administration.
Lawal disclosed that four terminals had recently received warning letters for violating lease agreements by causing pollution in the port as part of its efforts to enforce environmental sustainability.
He gave an example of how a nearby factory was instructed to modify its funnel to reduce hazardous emissions that were affecting a nearby terminal. He emphasized NPA’s insistence on clean terminals and rigorous adherence to environmental regulations, adding that physical inspections are used to verify environmental complaints.
Lawal pointed out that although there are penalties for non-compliance, the authority places a higher priority on engagement by giving clear instructions and deadlines before taking harsh action. According to him, these instructions frequently involve installing combustion controls and readjusting funnels in accordance with global best practices.
