Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the governor of Plateau State, has characterized the frequent attacks and murders in the state as purely genocide and not the problems of farmer-herder conflicts as is commonly depicted.
In the state’s Jebbu Binde village of Ta-Hoss District in the Riyom Local Government Area, where gunmen suspected of being Fulani militias attacked on Monday, killing over 30 people and destroying property valued at millions of naira, Governor Mutfwang made the claim on Wednesday. He also vowed to escalate the situation to the highest level until the perpetrators of the heinous act are apprehended and brought to justice.
Speaking to the traumatized attack victims, Gov. Mutfwang vehemently denounced the murders and promised the populace that his government would not desert them during their sorrow.
He also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protect the lives and property of citizens in every part of the state while promising to set up a committee to carry out a comprehensive review of the state’s security architecture to ensure those charged with the protection of lives and property discharge their responsibilities without compromise.
“This is not a case of farmer-herder conflict. This is terrorism; this is genocide, plain and simple. And I assure you, we will escalate this matter to the highest levels,” Mutfwang assured.
Additionally, he reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to stop the recurrent attacks by non-state actors by using all available tools, including elevating the matter to the highest level.
By God’s grace, I can assure you that Riyom will not fall. To put an end to this slaughter, we shall use every available resource.
“We can’t keep doing this. These assailants are not ghosts; actual persons committed these crimes and disappeared without a trace,” Governor Mutfwang said.
