Former Senator Shehu Sani has expressed a mix of support and skepticism regarding President Bola Tinubu’s recent security directive.
On Sunday, President Tinubu ordered the immediate withdrawal of all police officers attached to VIP escorts across the country, instructing that any individual needing protection must now request personnel from the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) instead. This move is part of a strategy to redeploy police officers to core community policing duties to address the country’s urgent security needs. The President also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers nationwide to boost security.
Reacting to the directive, Shehu Sani called the withdrawal order a “good idea and good policy statement” given the nation’s severe security challenges.
However, the former Senator voiced strong skepticism about the policy’s execution, fearing that it “will only begin and end up as a statement” and will not be fully implemented. This skepticism arises from the historical failure of similar directives issued by previous administrations to curb the practice of police officers being diverted to VIP protection.
