James Milner, a midfielder for Brighton, has made the decision to stop playing football at age 40.
Milner departs the game with the most appearances in the Premier League.
He made his Leeds debut in 2002 at the age of sixteen, and since then, he has played for Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester City, and Aston Villa, making 658 appearances.
“After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career,” Milner said in a statement.
“I could never have imagined the journey I’ve been on, from making my debut for Leeds United, who I grew up supporting, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, to being unable to lift my foot last year and returning at the age of 40 to help Brighton qualify for Europe for the second time in their history.”
It has been an enormous honor to represent Newcastle, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool, and Brighton after spending an unforgettable month at Swindon.
From fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my nation, I’ve had the good fortune to have some truly memorable experiences. Above all, though, I will always treasure the individuals and friendships I have formed while playing the game.
“I want to express my gratitude to my family for all of their sacrifices, miles traveled, and supportive moments. None of this would have been possible without you.
“I leave the game with a great sense of pride, thankfulness, and lifelong memories. I will always be grateful for the chances football has given me; it has given me far more than I could have ever anticipated.
