The Lagos State branch of the All Progressives Congress has condemned comments made by Kenneth Okonkwo of the African Democratic Congress, who suggested that a Supreme Court ruling on Rivers State allows President Bola Tinubu to govern via military authority. The APC characterized these claims as irresponsible, factually incorrect, and intellectually deceptive, emphasizing that judicial decisions are interpretations of law rather than military orders. Seye Oladejo, the party’s state spokesperson, asserted that the Supreme Court was simply exercising its constitutional role and that its rulings are binding, regardless of political disappointment. He defended President Tinubu’s democratic history, noting his past struggle against military rule, and dismissed the idea of him governing through military proxies as ridiculous. Oladejo accused the opposition of attempting to discredit the judiciary and incite public fear whenever legal outcomes do not favor their interests. He maintained that Nigeria’s democracy remains intact with a clear separation of powers and that the military remains under civilian leadership. The party concluded by urging Nigerians to reject such rhetoric, stating that Supreme Court verdicts serve to uphold justice and fortify democratic foundations rather than undermine them.
