In a midnight raid on Friday, members of the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce stormed several areas of Lagos Island and arrested 62 individuals, including three women and 59 men.
This is part of a reinvigorated drive to purge the city of criminal groups and restore public places, according to the Lagos State Government.
Targeting high-activity areas such as Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel axis, Osborne, and surrounding streets, where the presence of “undesirable elements” had apparently been increasing, the enforcement operation started at precisely 1.30 am.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, announced the raid on his verified X (formerly Twitter) feed and called the crackdown an essential step in bringing order back.The Environmental Taskforce team’s agents set out at around 0130 hours on Friday, May 23, 2025, to begin their ongoing clean-up enforcement operation on the Island as part of the agency’s ongoing effort to cleanse the State of criminal elements, he wrote.
The operation encompassed many hotspot spots where officials had noticed disruptive behavior, he noted.
Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel, Osborne, and other nearby streets where the presence of certain unwanted elements was observed are among the sites investigated during the operation.
“A total of 62 suspects—59 men and 3 women—were taken into custody during the raid exercise. “Everywhere, sanity was restored,” he added.
Wahab affirmed that charges would be brought against the suspects.
“All of the suspects will face the appropriate charges in court,” he said.
