For the first time, a US federal judge ruled that the Trump administration’s significant reforms to the Department of Education were illegal on Thursday, preventing the government from dissolving the agency.
Former President Joe Biden selected Judge Myong Joun of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, who issued a preliminary injunction preventing the administration from firing half of the department’s staff.
Additionally, it stopped the agency from giving the Small Business Administration control over federal student loans.
President Donald Trump of the United States has long criticized the department, claiming that despite large federal investments in education, the standard of instruction has fallen short of expectations.Trump claimed that the department is “doing us no good” and that his administration is bringing education back to the states, citing the low reading and math ability of American primary, middle, and high school pupils.
He formally started the process of dissolving the department in March by signing an executive order. In the past, the department started a massive layoff.
The department, which had 4,000 workers at the start, was to lay off over half of them, according to earlier U.S. media sources.
Legislation from Congress is typically required for the creation and dissolution of federal agencies.
