Atletico Madrid and Arsenal drew 1-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday, with Nigerian attacker Ademola Lookman being shut out.
For the first time in their history, Arsenal was playing in a UCL semi-final for the second time in a row. In the Spanish capital, where Atletico had not lost any of their previous six UCL knockout games against English teams (W3, D3), a rock-solid start was required.
Diego Simeone’s team was trying to break their visitors, and Lookman, who had missed their previous league encounter, was back in the starting lineup.
Early on, David Raya made a deft move to deflect Julián Alvarez’s curling effort around the post. However, the Gunners responded admirably to that fright, with captain Martin Ødegaard having Johnny Cardoso stop a dangerous strike before the energetic Noni Madueke missed a 25-yard shot.
