Maj.-Gen. Godwin Mutkut, the commander of the Nigerian Army’s Infantry Corps, has urged Nigerians to cease praising terrorists and instead support soldiers in their joint endeavor to put an end to terrorism, insurgency, and other security concerns facing the country.
While speaking with defense reporters in Kaduna, Mutkut made this appeal, emphasizing that while constructive criticism was important in any democracy, ongoing attacks on the military and the spread of terrorist propaganda on social media and other platforms were detrimental and could jeopardize national security initiatives.
Additionally, he discussed the role that citizens play in supporting ongoing military activities across the nation and the sacrifices made by soldiers.
He claims that every day, members of the Nigerian Armed Forces continue to make tremendous sacrifices—often at great personal cost—to protect the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The senior army official noted that as infantry soldiers are typically the ones who face terrorists head-on on the battlefield, they suffer the burden of combat operations.
“We are the primary force that faces the adversary head-on. Since infantry soldiers are in the forefront of combat activities, they are typically mentioned when discussing casualties. All Nigerian Army soldiers, however, play a part in the battle. Everyone in every corps—communications, artillery, armor, intelligence, logistics, or any other—wears the same uniform and continues to fight for the country’s defense, he stated.
