Nnamdi Kanu describes how his health deteriorated in DSS detention – Appeals to NMA with specific requests

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has claimed that his health has deteriorated while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu alleged that his medical condition worsened due to irregular, falsified, and at times grossly negligent healthcare practices during his detention by the DSS.

He made these claims in a formal letter and appeal addressed to the President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

The letter, dated September 29, 2025, was titled: “Grave concerns regarding my medical treatment and health management in DSS custody – Request for urgent intervention, protection of Independent practitioners, and immediate release of NMA medical assessment report.”

Kanu stated: “I, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, currently held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja, write with utmost urgency to present to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) a detailed account of my ongoing medical challenges.

“My health, already compromised by the traumatic abduction I suffered in Kenya, has further deteriorated due to erratic, falsified, and sometimes negligent medical practices in Nigeria.

“This letter seeks not only to formally notify the NMA of my condition but also to appeal to the ethical obligations of the medical profession under Nigerian law and international human rights norms.”

Kanu called on the NMA to investigate the alleged tampering of his medical records by DSS authorities.

He further urged: “I am specifically requesting that the NMA: Launch a thorough investigation into the manipulation of my medical records while in DSS custody.

Provide protection for independent medical professionals, particularly Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, whose medical intervention has been critical.

Facilitate the immediate release of the NMA medical team’s report dated September 22, 2025, as ordered by the Federal High Court to be submitted within four days.

Acknowledge and address the serious threats posed by untreated health issues, especially sleep deprivation caused by tinnitus, which continues to put my life at risk.”
