Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has distanced himself from the protests that followed the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly primaries in Lagos and cautioned people not to use his name to encourage protests or political agitation.
Additionally, Obasa dismissed attempts to link him to the escalating protests that have followed the publication of the party’s legislative primary candidate lists, calling such attempts unjust and deceptive.
His response follows a protest on Tuesday at the party’s secretariat on ACME Road in Ikeja by APC members from a number of local government areas, including Badagry, Mushin, Amuwo-Odofin, Eti-Osa, Somolu, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, and Oshodi-Isolo. The protesters claimed that there were irregularities in the conduct and results of the primaries.
The protest was the most recent in a string of demonstrations that have broken out throughout the state since the Lagos APC released the names of candidates purportedly emerging from the primary elections.
Messages claiming that Obasa had given N2 billion to support and organise the protests throughout the state went viral on WhatsApp during the controversy.
In response, the Speaker questioned the reasoning behind connecting him to the protests and rejected the accusations as untrue and unfounded.
“To assume or imply that I will import or mobilise protesters from various local governments to the secretariat is reckless, malevolent, deceptive, and unfounded. To precisely accomplish what?
“Why and how will I devote such an amount of money to organising protests when I am not a candidate in the contested election?” he asked.
Obasa also emphasised that he was still dedicated to maintaining harmony and peace within the APC, cautioning against attempts to use his name in ways that could cause division within the party.
He continued, “I am a peace-loving party man, and I detest the use of my name and office for any form of illegality or to sow division within the party.”
The Speaker reaffirmed his commitment to the stability and advancement of Lagos’ ruling party, saying that he is still focused on fostering harmony and assisting the state’s ongoing development.
Obasa declared, “My unwavering commitment remains the unity, peace, and progress of our great party and the people of Lagos State.”
