According to PUNCH Sports Extra, new Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is looking forward to his Super Eagles debut and has hinted at a possible invitation ahead of the Unity Cup later this month and the international friendlies against Portugal and Poland next month.
Okonkwo, who was born in Camden to Nigerian parents, qualified to play for Nigeria last month when FIFA authorized his international transfer from England.
During his tenure at Arsenal, Okonkwo has represented England at several young levels, including the U-18 squad.
The Wrexham goalkeeper reportedly decided to change allegiance after meeting Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle in London during the June 2025 Unity Cup competition, which Nigeria won.
The 24-year-old voiced his delight about the prospect of representing the nation in a Nigeria Football Federation-branded video that our correspondent saw prior to this year’s competition.Being able to play for your nation is an honor. I am giddy with anticipation. It’s amazing to have the chance at last,” the goalie remarked.
Okonkwo joins Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye, and adolescent sensation Ebenezer Harcou on Nigeria’s goalkeeping depth chart, which is presently headed by Stanley Nwabali.
After graduating from Arsenal’s junior academy, Okonkwo played on loan at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz before making a permanent move to Wrexham in the summer of 2023.
With 121 matches and two promotions under his belt, he has since established himself as the Welsh club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Wrexham lost out on promotion to the Premier League this season despite Okonkwo playing in 44 games across all competitions and maintaining 10 clean sheets.
