The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) accused the state government of deliberately creating tension in Igbajo following the death of the controversial Owa of Igbajoland, Oba Philip Adegboyega Famodun, last Friday. In a statement by spokesman Kola Olabisi, the APC alleged that the Governor Ademola Adeleke-led government showed pathological hatred for the late monarch, even after his death, by implementing a 24-hour curfew that disrupts the ongoing seven-day traditional burial rites which began on Sunday. The party warned that the state government should be held accountable for any crisis arising from the conduct of these rites. The APC referenced the history of Oba Famodun’s stool, noting that he was the last officially reinstated Owa at the time of his death, who should be afforded his traditional burial rites, and urged the Inspector-General of Police to intervene and immediately reverse the curfew for the sake of peace.
In response, the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the APC of attempting to deflect blame for its alleged neglect of the late monarch during his illness. The PDP, through its chairman Sunday Bisi, countered that the curfew was necessary and imposed based on security reports indicating an imminent breakdown of law and order in Igbajo. The PDP maintained that the Governor has a constitutional duty to maintain order and accused alleged APC supporters of attempting to disrupt the peace in the town, justifying the restrictions. The party dismissed the APC’s criticism as an attempt to mask internal failures and urged the public to disregard the opposition’s misleading claims, insisting that Governor Adeleke acted strictly within constitutional boundaries after law and order broke down from Sunday night into Monday morning, following the announcement of Oba Famodun’s death.
