The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), operating under “Operation Whirlwind,” has seized petroleum products valued at N181.6 million over eight weeks along the Nigeria–Cameroon borders.
This announcement was made by ACG Kolapo Oladeji, National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, at a news conference held in Yola on Thursday.
He specified that the seizures were a result of 55 separate operations carried out across various smuggling hotspots in Adamawa State.
Oladeji explained that the operation aims to support energy and food security and encourage economic growth, aligning with the core directives of President Bola Tinubu.
He stated, “In line with these mandates, Operation Whirlwind Zone ‘D’ has repositioned all its machinery across its areas of responsibility, ensuring that the border becomes airtight.”
He issued a warning to smugglers to stop their activities and requested the ongoing support of all stakeholders for the state’s socioeconomic development.
He added, “We will ensure that the supply chains of these economic wreckers are truncated in accordance with enabling laws,” and claimed that this effort has helped in transforming the nation’s economy and strengthening border security.
Oladeji further announced that the seized petroleum products would be auctioned to the public.
Mrs. Abidemi Adewumi-Aluko, Assistant Legal Adviser in the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, commented that the auction signifies the reclaiming of resources to guarantee that the benefits of petroleum remain within Nigeria. She also noted that such offenses are a threat to national security and attract life imprisonment, urging smugglers to abandon the illegal practice.
