Former local government councillors in Plateau State announced they will not accept what they claim are plans by Governor Caleb Mutfwang to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking in Jos on Monday, Dabit Dashe, the spokesman for the Immediate Past Elected Councillors Forum, stated that the governor’s reported interest in the APC contradicts his prior public remarks dismissing the party in the state.
Dashe told journalists, “Governor Mutfwang has consistently said there is no APC in Plateau and that he would never join a party he once described as collapsing. His sudden desperation is therefore confusing.”
The forum accused the governor of poor governance, alleging his policies have led to hardship, displacement, job losses, and the firing of over four thousand young people from their positions.
They also claimed he defied a Supreme Court ruling by removing elected chairmen and councillors across all 17 local government areas.
They argue these actions should disqualify him from joining the party they refer to as the “progressive APC.”
The former councillors appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and Plateau Chairman Rufus Bature to reject any move by the governor to join the party.
They also brought up Governor Mutfwang’s past criticism of the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket during the 2023 elections, questioning his sudden change in political alignment.
The forum concluded that the governor offers no political benefit to the APC and should remain in the PDP, allowing the opposition to continue holding him accountable. They expressed confidence in APC National Chairman, Prof. Yilwatda, and endorsed President Tinubu for re-election in 2027.
