The State Secretary of the Taraba State All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth Vanguard, Dr. Jinadu Garvey Yaweh, described the ongoing political defections in the state as “unprecedented.”
Responding to reporters’ questions on Monday in Jalingo, the state capital, Yaweh noted that the continuous movement of politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC has accelerated recently.
He claimed that all 24 members of the State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, have now joined the APC, calling this a significant re-alignment of the state’s political structure.
He further pointed out that several high-ranking government officials, such as commissioners, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Gebon Timothy Kataps, and the PDP State Chairman, Abubakar Bawa, have also defected, leaving the PDP’s political framework in the state “almost empty.”
He credited this trend to what he called the unifying leadership approach of Governor Agbu Kefas, whom he praised as “an embodiment of justice, fairness, and political maturity.”
He alleged that although Governor Kefas has not formally announced his defection, the governor has already “unofficially” aligned himself with the APC, with only the official declaration remaining.
According to him, the governor’s formal switch to the APC was postponed because of recent national security issues, specifically the attack in Kebbi State, which caused a review of his political schedule.
The APC youth leader asserted that Taraba would benefit more by associating with the ruling party at the national level, arguing that this alignment would facilitate attracting development projects.
He also dismissed concerns about Nigeria moving towards a one-party system, insisting that the current wave of defections reflects strong leadership and clear political direction, which he believes will promote unity and accelerate Taraba’s development.
