Citing increased worries about student misconduct, the Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has banned signing-out activities and associated behaviours in all educational institutions throughout the state.
Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, issued a circular with the directive on Monday. It was copied to Governor Dauda Lawal, security services, school administrators, and other pertinent parties.
The ministry claims that final-year student-organized signing-out events have increasingly turned into forums for “gross misconduct, indecent behaviour, and other disturbing activities,” which go against the moral and intellectual standards maintained by the state’s educational system.
The government ordered the immediate suspension of all school signing-out activities in order to combat the trend.
In order to guarantee appropriate distribution and implementation of the directive, it also instructed all institutions to organise required meetings with stakeholders. It was also suggested that parents and guardians warn their kids and wards from engaging in such behaviour.
Teachers, students, and other accountable personnel would face severe consequences, the ministry said.
According to the circular, “any teacher found aiding or condoning such acts will face serious disciplinary measures, ranging from a query to a final written warning, suspension, or demotion.”
Penalties for students include the potential to repeat their final year if needed, as well as the withholding or cancellation of results.
Religious and community leaders were asked to support the project by encouraging moral advice among young people, while security agencies and school security officers have been instructed to ensure stringent surveillance and compliance.
It emphasized, “The Ministry is restating the state government’s commitment to discipline, academic excellence, and the protection of moral standards in all schools across Zamfara State.”
