The Presidential Committee on the Overhaul and Revamp of Training Institutions for Security Agencies, led by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, has guaranteed that it will meet the submission deadline for its findings. These findings will include a detailed bill of quantities outlining the total refurbishment cost for the nation’s security training facilities to allow for full implementation.
This promise was delivered on Thursday during the committee’s inspection of the Nigeria Police Training School, Nonwa-Tai, in Rivers State, as part of its nationwide tour of security training institutions.
The eight-member committee, established by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu under the National Economic Council, was accompanied by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and the committee’s Secretary, retired IGP Baba Usman, among others.
During the inspection, the team observed that the Nonwa-Tai facility was in a state of severe disrepair, marked by dilapidated buildings, vandalized infrastructure, and an overgrown premise.
Presidential Mandate and Urgency
Addressing reporters after the assessment, Governor Mbah explained that the inspection aligns with President Tinubu’s directive for the urgent evaluation and rehabilitation of all police and security training centers across Nigeria.
He stated that the President’s initiative shows his recognition that Nigeria’s security challenges require immediate and complete solutions.
According to Mbah, “The president personally inaugurated this committee because he recognises that we are at a security crossroads. Nothing short of a complete and urgent overhaul is required.” He stressed that the President has already approved the recruitment of 30,000 new police personnel, a process that cannot commence without functional training facilities.
Governor Mbah noted that the visit served as a fact-finding mission to personally confirm reports gathered from across the country.
He added, “We cannot demand integrity and excellence from our officers when the institutions that train them are neglected and broken. This exercise reflects the president’s commitment to get things done and done quickly.” He assured the public that the committee’s work would proceed rapidly.
Committee Operations
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Governor Fubara described the visit as a decisive move toward restoring professionalism and morale within the police force.
Governor Abiodun further emphasized the assignment’s urgency, revealing that the committee has a four-week deadline to finalize its work. He added that the members have been split into two teams: one focused on inspecting training centers in the North and the other covering those in the South.
