In an effort to combat climate change, desertification, deforestation, and biodiversity loss nationwide, the Federal Government on Monday launched a one-million-tree planting initiative at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna.
The Nigerian Defence Academy, Fifth Chukker, and the Africa Finance Corporation collaborated on the project, which was introduced at the NDA Biodiversity Conservation Center in Kaduna.
Abubakar Buba, the Kaduna State Commissioner for Environment, spoke on behalf of Environment Minister Balarabe Lawal and characterized the initiative as a historic environmental intervention with significant ecological and socioeconomic advantages.
According to him, Kaduna State is dealing with escalating environmental problems, such as growing desertification in the northern axis and ongoing deforestation in the southern regions, which continue to endanger agricultural production, water resources, and biodiversity.
Kaduna is at a crucial ecological turning point. While deforestation has steadily reduced the forest cover that once regulated rainfall patterns and safeguarded important watersheds, desertification is still advancing relentlessly to our north, according to Buba.
He claims that the program is in line with the Federal Ministry of Environment’s dedication to climate resilience and sustainable environmental management.
The commissioner praised the AFC and NDA’s cooperation, pointing out that the academy’s conservation area offered the institutional framework and security necessary to guarantee the reforestation program’s success.
He said the planned planting of one million trees would go beyond symbolic to bring substantial environmental benefits.
“The planting of one million trees represents a significant ecological intervention capable of sequestering substantial quantities of carbon dioxide while advancing Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Climate Agreement,” he said.
Buba noted that the project’s emphasis on developing a natural and self-sustaining forest ecosystem, rather than a monoculture plantation, would boost biodiversity conservation, wildlife protection and ecosystem resilience.
He revealed that the Kaduna State Government had previously given the NDA 10,000 tree seedlings, all of which had been successfully planted and were flourishing, while assuring the partners of ongoing government support.
Ismail Zubairu, the President and CEO of AFC, spoke at the ceremony and stated that the project demonstrated the organization’s dedication to long-term development and environmental sustainability.
We’re here for more than just planting trees. We’ve come together to make a commitment to this property, the nearby towns, and future generations,” he declared.
Zubairu noted that deforestation, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation continued to be significant barriers to sustainable development in Nigeria, especially in the country’s north.He emphasized that environmental stewardship was a crucial component of AFC’s development mandate, maintaining that environmental preservation and economic growth must advance simultaneously.
Citing the NDA’s goal of creating the nation’s largest man-made conservation center and a premier hub for biodiversity and sustainability research, the AFC head praised the organization as an excellent partner.
He revealed that AFC had implemented a strategy whereby the company would plant two more trees for each tree that its employees supported.
He claims that the project goes beyond planting trees to encompass conservation research, environmental education, skill development, the creation of green jobs, and the formation of a future seed bank and nursery for endangered plant species.
The NDA Commandant, Major-General, stated in his welcome speech that environmental degradation is a national security concern that calls for immediate and coordinated action.
National security is environmental security. If a country’s air is contaminated, its water is limited, and its land is barren, it cannot be secure,” he stated.
According to Olatoye, the academy founded the Biodiversity Conservation Center two years ago in order to encourage environmental education and research, preserve native plants and animals, and restore ecological equilibrium.
He pointed out that the recently planted trees would help with erosion prevention, carbon capture, and environmental education for upcoming military commanders.
The commandant also praised AFC for proving that financial institutions could contribute significantly to the advancement of national development and environmental sustainability.
As part of their responsibility to protect the future of the country, he urged academy officers, cadets, and staff to adopt environmental stewardship.
