The chieftaincy title that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and four other individuals were recently given during the Igede Agba yam festival in Oju Local Government Area, Benue State, has been declared invalid by the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC). The Adirahu of Igede, His Royal Highness, CP (Rtd.) Oga Ero, presented the honor during the festival on Saturday. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), accepted it on behalf of the President.
At the event, a number of other celebrities were also given comparable titles.
However, the Idoma Area Traditional Council, led by His Royal Majesty Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John, Och’Idoma V and its president, issued a statement on Monday declaring that the action violated its standing directive to suspend all chieftaincy title conferments in Idoma land.
The act went against the IATC’s September 2, 2025, declaration, according to a statement titled “Nullification of Purported Chieftaincy Titles Conferred by the Igede Traditional Council” and released by Mr. Adegbe Uloko, the IATC secretary.
It quoted the council and stated: “The Igede Traditional Council’s alleged grant of chieftaincy titles on September 6, 2025, is a clear violation of the Idoma Area Traditional Council’s Declaration. Such gifts have no legal, customary, or traditional significance and are void.
