The Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, has requested the assistance of the State Police Command in securing justice, accountability, and safety for women and children within the State.
During a courtesy visit to the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, Adeleye emphasized that the engagement was vital for enhancing the cooperation between her Ministry and the Police in combating abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence (GBV).
Adeleye highlighted the Ministry’s experience with numerous GBV and child abuse cases requiring police intervention. While acknowledging positive cooperation, she pointed out concerning gaps, including reports that traumatized victims were sometimes allegedly required to pay for investigation costs and transportation, or that out-of-court settlements were encouraged, thereby obstructing justice. She urged the Police Command to address these issues with “deliberate reform” and renewed compassion.
To improve interventions, Adeleye noted her Ministry’s establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) and Women Development Centres for survivors’ rehabilitation and empowerment. She specifically requested the Police to create Family Support Units (FSUs) in all Police Divisions to serve as dedicated desks for professional and prompt handling of domestic and sexual violence cases.
In response, CP Lanre Ogunlowo praised the Commissioner’s passion and commitment to child protection. He assured that the Command would increase its administrative diligence in handling gender-related cases. Ogunlowo pledged continuous logistical and manpower support, revealing that all gender-related cases will henceforth be managed directly by the State Command Headquarters, and officers will receive improved specialized training on GBV incidents.
