William Troost-Ekong, the captain of the Super Eagles, has thought back on Victor Osimhen’s lost opportunity during the team’s final FIFA World Cup playoff matchup with Gabon in 2026. Osimhen was put up by a brilliant pass from Wilfred Ndidi, but he missed a chance. The game went into extra time when the Galatasaray striker failed to convert the opportunity. However, the 26-year-old helped Nigeria triumph 4-1 with two goals in extra time. According to Troost-Ekong, they urged the forward to continue after 90 minutes. He told ESPN Africa, “I was certain he was going to score when I saw him running at the goalkeeper, but after that we tried to encourage him and make sure he wasn’t disheartened.” Samuel Chukwueze also considered Osimhen’s failure. “But it’s football sometimes, everyone knows he can score that kind of goal, and it’s fantastic that he gave us two goals,” Chukwueze remarked.
