As a member of Wake Forest High School’s Class of 2026, Rena Wakama was elected into the Hall of Fame in honor of her accomplishments as a coach and player on the international scene, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
At the school’s induction banquet, the D’Tigress head coach was one of five honorees honored.
Graham Bunn, Ron Daniel, Andre Smith, and Earl Smith are also members of the Class of 2026.
In response to the award on Tuesday, Wakama said that the honor represented a communal journey rather than an individual achievement and credited the milestone to heavenly guidance and group support.
Wakama posted on Instagram, “All praise to God, the legacy was never mine to keep, only His to build.”
We all share this inheritance, so thank you to my village. Thank you, Wake Forest High School.
The 34-year-old has advanced quickly in the coaching ranks, holding positions as assistant coach at the Chicago Sky and head coach of Hive BC in addition to her position with D’Tigress.In 2023, she became the first female head coach of D’Tigress and the first Nigerian to win an AfroBasket championship with the women’s national team since the competition’s founding in 1966.
