Why Declan Rice and Partey clashed during Arsenal’s 2-1 victory against Real Madrid in the UCL

The final moments of Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid on Wednesday night left midfielder Declan Rice furious at teammate Thomas Partey.

After a confrontation with Dani Ceballos of Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, Partey was given a late yellow card for dissent. Following an aerial incident in which Madrid center back Antonio Rudiger caught Mikel Merino’s back, the Ghanaian midfielder scolded the referee.

Rice grabbed Partey by the arm, gritted his teeth, and shoved him in the back as he vented his wrath after he was later booked for dissent. He will miss the opening leg of their Champions League semi-final matchup with Paris Saint-Germain due to the booking. After Jorginho sustained a chest injury against Brentford last weekend, Mikel Arteta will be expecting to see him return to full fitness for the PSG match.

After winning the first leg at the Emirates last week 3-0, Arsenal easily defeated Los Blancos 5-1 on aggregate.
