On Tuesday, members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Borno State protested the growing number of student abductions in the state’s schools by taking to the streets and the government building.
The protest is in response to a direction from the NUT’s national leadership that was signed by the union’s secretary, Clinton Ikpitibo, and president, Audu Amba, in a circular dated May 29, 2026.
In order to raise awareness of the growing insecurity impacting schools, the circular required all state chapters to hold solidarity demonstrations.
While spearheading the demonstration, Bako Monguno, the secretary of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Borno State, and Yusuf Tom, the union’s national publicity secretary, demanded quick action to guarantee the security of schools throughout the state and the nation.Tom stated that the union has the chance to call for immediate government action in response to the growing number of kidnapping incidents in schools.

“Children deserve protection. Tom said, “We want the government to step up efforts to save these kids, teachers, and coworkers in Borno and other states.”
Mustapha Usman, the state’s association treasurer, stated that the government does not treat kidnapping victims fairly.
“We are voicing our grievances today because we are unhappy that the government is not prioritizing the welfare of Mussa community children who were abducted,” he stated.
Abdullahi Saidu, a teacher, also demanded that all students in captivity be freed right away.
“No pupil ought to be kept in captive. “All of them should be saved by the government,” he declared.
In an interview with PUNCH Online, another association member also voiced dissatisfaction with the nation’s ongoing murders. “How long will this continue?” asked a member who went by the name Ibrahim. You kidnap students, instructors, tourists, elderly folks, and others. Nowhere is secure once more. Change is necessary.
