The Senate’s amended Clause 60(3) on the electronic transmission of election results has caused great worry, according to a coalition of civil society organizations. Embedded ambiguity might compromise the integrity of the election, they cautioned. The Senate accepted a revised clause allowing the electronic transmission of polling unit results during an extraordinary plenary on Tuesday, reversing its previous rejection of electronic transmission.Form EC8A is designated as the principal source of election results, and electronic transmission is required “as long as it does not fail,” according to the new clause. To match the House of Representatives, the Senate also increased the number of members on its conference committee from six to twelve. The Center for Media and Society, The Kukah Center, International Press Center, Elect Her, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, TAF Africa, and Yiaga Africa all signed the statement, which praised the Senate’s decision to change its previous stance and called it a positive reaction to persistent public pressure.
