Following Emmanuel King Okoye’s tragic death, the football communities in Italy and Nigeria have been overcome with grief.
Okoye, a 25-year-old midfielder, passed out on Wednesday during a game in his home nation.
Okoye, who was born in 2000, was visiting relatives in Nigeria at the time of the sad incident.
According to reports from the City of Canicattini Police Department and Notiziario del Calcio, the young football player collapsed suddenly after suffering a severe head injury in a major accident on the pitch.
Emergency services arrived quickly and gave Okoye emergency medical attention before taking him to the hospital, but they were unable to revive him in spite of their best efforts.
In Italy, where Okoye played for a significant amount of his career with a number of amateur clubs, including Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport, the tragedy has had a profound impact.
“The Pol.D. City of Canicattini is in mourning,” Canicattini Calcio said in remembrance of their former player. Emmanuel, a former Acri and Palmese footballer, wore the Giallorossi shirt in the 2018–19 campaign. He was renowned for his commitment, moral character, and passion for the game.
All that’s left now are memories, from the spectacular goal he scored in Mazzarrone to the intimate relationship he had with Massimo Ficara, another angel who, like him, departed from us way too soon.
