In an effort to combat corruption in its feeding program, the Jigawa State Government fired a number of contractors and kitchen employees who were allegedly defrauding the system and undervaluing patients and students.
In a statement given to reporters on Monday, Auwalu D. Sankara, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Special Duties, made this claim.
He claimed that the crackdown came after unexpected visits to medical facilities and schools in the local government areas of Kazaure, Roni, Gwiwa, and Yankwashi.
“In some schools, the number of students being reported was far higher than those actually present,” he said.
Only 123 pupils were observed at the Government Junior Secondary School in Karkarna, Yankwashi, despite records indicating 257.
“Funds intended to feed children were being diverted, as evidenced by similar gaps found in other locations.”
Concerns over the food’s quality were also voiced. Inspectors discovered that certain contractors failed to serve meals that were up to par and provided subpar rice.
Four culinary masters were fired by the ministry for allegedly fabricating data after the results. Another contractor at Gwiwa Hospital was fired for missing meals and not meeting standards, while two contractors were removed for providing subpar food.
At the Computer Girls Science Secondary School in Roni, two school administrators are being investigated for allegedly conspiring to falsify records.
According to Sankara, the government would not put up with any behavior that violates the rights of patients and students.
He reassured locals that the government would keep doing surprise inspections to make sure the program accomplishes its goals.
