The notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, has claimed that two past northern governors are responsible for escalating insecurity in the country, particularly in the North. Turji made this accusation in a video that went viral on Sunday, alleging that previous political leaderships in Zamfara and Sokoto states established the conditions for the region’s long-term security issues. According to the bandit leader, he was involved in multiple peace discussions with the Zamfara State government during the tenure of a former governor. However, he refuted reports that he received thirty million Naira or any other material compensation for his participation in these talks. At the time this report was filed, attempts to get comments from both former governors were unsuccessful. According to Vanguard, multiple sources close to the former governors insisted that the statements of a terrorist should not be taken seriously or trusted. One source questioned why anyone would place importance on a terrorist’s claims, suggesting that the terrorist is merely attempting to portray himself as a victim and that his statements are fabrications. Turji further alleged that previous administrations provided weapons to local vigilante groups, widely known as ‘Yan Banga,’ which he claimed unjustly targeted Fulani communities and worsened the violence. He specifically named the former governors of Sokoto and Zamfara States, demanding their arrest and investigation for their alleged involvement in the crisis. Turji stated, “We openly say that former governors of Zamfara and Sokoto states are responsible for the calamities that befell these states.”
