Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, has taken aim at referee Danny Makkelie for overturning a penalty during Wednesday’s 1-1 Champions League match with Atletico Madrid.

By that time, Viktor Gyokeres’ penalty in the second half had been cancelled out by Julian Alvarez.

After substitute Eberechi Eze crossed the line, Makkelie indicated the location. VAR then suggested that the incident be reviewed.

At that point, the referee chose to reverse his ruling.

“After going back into the dressing room, speaking to the boys and watching the penalty incident, it’s extremely disappointing and annoyed because it was against the rules and it changes the course of the tie,” Arteta said to media following the game. I’m really, really angry.

“The entire sequence. There is unmistakable communication; once you make a decision, it cannot be reversed after 13 iterations. At this point, it is totally intolerable.

It’s a poor choice that alters the outcome of the tie. At this level, that is not possible.
